Sen. Jerry Tillman’s (R-Guilford) 18-year career in the North Carolina Senate came to an end as he stepped down from his long-term role, Senate President Phil Berger (R-Rockingham) said on his Medium press website.

“It has been a pleasure serving the people that I have been so honored to represent over the years. My greatest joy in serving has always come from helping people with their everyday needs,” Tillman said in a statement on Berger's press site on June 25. His last official day was June 30.

During his time as a senator, he was a key supporter of Randolph Hospital and North Carolina Zoo, Berger posted to his website. Tillman, who spent nine terms in the state senate, was a chamber leader and the chair of the Senate Finance Committee, chair of the Senate Appropriations Committee on Education and majority whip.

"Jerry has been a leader in the Senate and a fierce advocate for his constituents," Berger said in a statement on his website. "Oftentimes, after a long day of work, I’d find Jerry sitting outside my office ready to go to battle over some provision that he wanted for his district. He’s left his mark on the Senate and our state, and I wish him the best in this next chapter."

His days as a senator began shortly after he spent years in the education spectrum where he was a teacher, coach, principal, and assistant superintendent.

His colleagues and fellow legislators salute his history and education and frequently called him “coach.”
