1960, 26 William Penn High School students became the first high school students to stage a Woolworth’s sit-in

City of High Point issued the following announcement on Feb. 11.

1960, 26 William Penn High School students became the first high school students to stage a Woolworth’s sit-in. They refused to give up their seats at the counter of Woolworth’s in downtown High Point in a peaceful protest against segregation. To learn more about this historic event, check out the February 11 Monument on Wrenn Street, behind the former Woolworth’s building.
