The High Point City Council determined former city manager Greg Demko will not have to repay the $50,000 he received to continue working until 2021, despite the fact he is no longer employed.
Demko resigned May 22 and the $50,000 was part of a retention bonus if he remained working until next year, the High Point Enterprise reported on May 27. The recent contract between Demko and the city stated if he resigned before November 2021, he would have to return half of his retention bonus.
Instead of not having to pay back the $50,000, a separation agreement between the city and its former administrator will allow Demko to collect an additional $205,000 in severance pay for one year, plus any remaining paid time off, High Point Enterprise reported.
It is not clear what promoted Demko's resignation, High Point Enterprise reported. However, the separation agreement blocks the former city manager from suing High Point. He is also banned from seeking future employment with the city and if he is hired for work that is greater than his severance he will have to pay it back. If he receives a new job that pays less than $205,000, his separation pay will be reduced by the city.
