The Choctaw Nation and Indian Removal” is the topic of a talk by UNCG history professor Dr. Greg O’Brien at 6:30 p.m. Monday, October 10, at the Asheboro library.O’Brien’s discussion will focus on the interaction between the Choctaw Nation and the United States as the Choctaws, in 1830, became the first Indian nation to sign a removal treaty exchanging millions of acres in Mississippi for land in Indian Territory, now Oklahoma.The talk will cover how the state of Mississippi threatened the Choctaws, how Choctaw people resisted banishment, and how the U.S. government forced the issue with passage of the Indian Removal Act.O’Brien is head of the UNCG Department of History. His research focuses on Native Americans in the U.S. south, American environmental history and the Revolutionary War era. He is author or editor of five books and numerous articles.
