With the beginning of many school’s right around the corner… think before you share your back to school photos. Those photos often reveal too much information about your child.
"What not to post on social media? The first day of school chalkboards. If it just says first day, that's not terrible, but some of them have the child's name, teacher's name, school, favorite sports or activities and maybe you don't want a bunch of strangers knowing that," says Cathy Pedrayes, a cybersecurity professional. This information can be used by predators (and even scammers) to locate your child in person or online.
When taking photos, she recommends avoiding including names on backpacks or lunchboxes, house numbers and license plates in your photos. Be careful posting school uniforms and sports uniforms as you are revealing where your kids are most days of the year. It is vulnerable information.
While we love seeing our friend’s photos, it is best to keep your personal information to a minimum. Send those detailed photos to immediate family or friends in a text/private message/group.
(You could go “old-school” and print those photos out for your child’s photo album each year. Hello, graduation gift!).
