Uwharrie Ridge Six-Twelve hosted a “Reality Store” for 8th graders. The Reality Store is a “Communities in Schools of Randolph County” initiative that teaches financial literacy and gives young people an idea of how difficult balancing a budget can be for families. Each student is given a hypothetical family situation, job, and monthly income. The student then goes from table to table to “purchase” housing, transportation, insurance, childcare, etc. The objective is to teach students the importance of managing finances and staying within a budget. Volunteers from our school system and community work the tables and assist the students with their financial decisions.
