City of Asheboro issued the following announcement on Apr. 24.
To my fellow citizens:
On April 23, Governor Cooper announced an extension of the state-wide stay-at-home order through May 8. There is no question that these past two months have been extremely challenging to us all, especially those whose businesses or employment have been negatively impacted by the drastic, necessary measures taken to slow the spread of COVID-19. But, with no vaccine or proven treatment for the virus, it is clear that social distancing is the most effective tool that we currently have to combat this dreadful disease.
Importantly, Governor Cooper outlined steps that will be taken to ease restrictions once the facts show that the percentage of people testing positive for the virus has declined and that the rate of hospitalizations due to COVID-19 infections have stabilized or declined. These “benchmarks” are similar to the targets announced by President Trump’s administration for lifting restrictions. We all know that easing restrictions is vital to getting our economy back on track and the only way we can achieve that is to continue doing what most of us have already been doing; work from home if you can, avoid social gatherings and unnecessary travel, and practice good hygiene.
Be kind to and supportive of each other. Check-in frequently by phone, text or old-fashioned letters with family and friends that you miss dearly and have been unable to see. And give thanks to our first responders and medical professionals on the front lines of this battle and continue to keep them in your prayers.
We will prevail if we all do our part. Stay safe, stay well, and stay home as much as possible so that these restrictions can be lifted.
