The CMS assigned Graybrier an overall rating of 3 out of 5—slightly higher than the 2.9 average for North Carolina nursing homes.

Alpine Health and Rehabilitation of Asheboro led as the largest facility in the county, providing 238 beds. The third largest, Asheboro Rehabilitation and Healthcare Center, offered 100 beds.

According to U.S. Census Bureau estimates, the nation’s population of older adults is growing while the number of children declines. From 2020 to 2024, Americans age 65 and older increased by 13%, as those under 18 fell by 1.7%. The older adult population has expanded significantly over the past 100 years, growing from 4.9 million in 1920 to more than 61 million by 2024.

A 2021 study found nearly half of these older adults—about 28 million—may need long-term services and support. The report also predicts more than one-third could require nursing home care in the future.

“Living a long life is something that many of us want and could get,” said Jesse Slome, executive director of the American Association for Long-Term Care Insurance, an insurance education organization. “But when we live a long life, the chances of us needing long-term care increase exponentially. But when you need that type of care, there are limited options.”
