Eli Nathaniel Gray was taken into custody and charged with three counts of felony second-degree sexual exploitation of a minor, according to a May 15 announcement by the Invictus Task Force. The arrest followed an investigation that began in February after the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children issued a Cybertip.
The case highlights ongoing efforts by local law enforcement to address internet crimes against children. The Invictus Task Force is a collaborative effort among Randolph, Alamance, Davidson, Forsyth, and Rockingham Counties, as well as the Liberty Police Department, State Bureau of Investigation, and Homeland Security. The task force aims to combat internet crimes against children (ICAC), sexual abuse, trafficking, and child exploitation through resource sharing.
On May 14, the Invictus Task Force executed a search warrant with assistance from the Charlotte Mecklenburg Police Department and the State Bureau of Investigations Computer Crimes Unit. As a result of this operation, Gray was arrested and transported to the Forsyth County Detention Center. Authorities said that no bond was issued for Gray and his first court appearance in Forsyth County District Court was set for May 15. The investigation remains ongoing; officials encourage anyone with information related to this case to contact representatives from the Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office Invictus Task Force.
Gray is identified as being from Charlotte and is reported to be 24 years old at the time of arrest.
The broader context shows challenges facing youth in Randolph County schools: Of 1,226 senior students taking the science portion of the ACT in Randolph County school districts during the 2022-23 school year, only 195 (15.9%) were considered ready for college; similarly low percentages were seen in reading (23.6%) and math (13.1%). Junior students showed comparable results across all subjects according to North Carolina Department of Public Instruction.
The press release urges anyone who believes they or someone they know may be a victim of child exploitation or trafficking to call the national hotline at 1-888-373-7888 or text “HELP” to 233733 for assistance.
